I attended and presented at the annual Christian Society of Kinesiology, Leisure, and Sport Studies conference hosted by Lipscomb University, Nashville, TN from June 7-9, 2017. Christian Higher Education Professors attended from many universities both from the United States and Canada. This year’s major emphasis was on Sport and Ministry in our field. The two keynote speakers focus was on sport ministry and the media and its impact upon how we perceive sport ministry.
My presentation, “Shared Staffing Between the Small College Kinesiology and Athletic Programs: Can You effectively Serve Two Masters,” focused on shared staffing between Kinesiology and Athletic Departments. A key element for the success of this approach is for either the department chair or athletic director to take the lead in the assessment of the effectiveness of the professor/coach. The presentation was well received with much discussion on how as professionals we can clearly define the expectations of our staff members.
CONNECTING AND SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES
Another key component of the conference was addressing, not only how we can do a better job of integrating our faith with learning, but also how we can connect with the communities we serve. Many ideas were shared on how to be an active part of the community in which our universities reside. Overall it was a great time of sharing and learning from fellow Christian scholars in my field.
