Dr. Katherine Tong

Katherine Tong brings over 30 years of combined experiences as a Registered Nurse (RN), board certified family nurse practitioner (CFNP), and educator. She has taught courses in Community and Urban Health, Case Management, Health Assessment, including writing courses. Dr. Tong currently serves as the Department Chair/Director of the Prelicensure BSN Program at Vanguard University. She has also served as a Department Chair for the following programs (RN-BSN, blended and on-line, LVN-to-BSN, 2+2 transfer, Bridge to BSN). She keeps her skills current by seeing pediatric and women’s health patients. Dr. Tong loves to bring her experiences to students to enhance their learning in class. “If you can put into practice what you are saying to students, it validates what you are teaching.” In July 2015, Dr. Tong and other researchers were awarded a 5-year grant with the National Institute of Health for their project entitled INSPIRE: INdigenous Samoan Program to Initiate Research Excellence; goals are to eliminate cancer disparities and enhance research capacity in the resource-constrained community of American Samoa. Her future research will continue to focus on health literacy and health promotion behaviors in vulnerable populations.
