This is the first of a series of videos to help you get started using Canvas.
While it isn’t necessary to have it in front of you, there is an M1 step-by-step guide you can reference while watching the video.
In this video, you will learn how to:
Customize your profile
It is a great practice to let others in the community know a bit more about you, by customizing your profile. Include as much or as little information as you might want to share with all faculty and students who use Canvas.
Add alternate ways to contact you
You may want to include an alternate email address that Canvas can use in notifying you of certain events that happen within your courses. You can also add your cell phone number, which won’t be publicized to your students, but can also be set up to notify you of events that happen in Canvas.
Change your display name
If you prefer to have your students call you something other than your first name, you can customize your display name to your preferred name. This will show up when you are commenting on students’ work as you grade, and when you participate in discussion forums, for example.
Set your notification preferences
As connected as many of us are today, being able to identify precisely those instances in which we might want a notification to show up on our cell phones, or when we would prefer to receive an email can be a powerful way for getting Canvas to work well for you.
Higher education is making greater use of more holistic method of evaluating students’ learning, including through leveraging electronic portfolios. Students can create portfolios of their work that they make public to other members of the Vanguard community, or even to outside audiences, like potential employers.
